The Big Picture

The 2027.1 "Indri" PTG wrapped up this week, and the mailing list reflects it: project teams are publishing summaries, posting follow-ups, and cancelling the usual meetings. The headline governance news is that the five-year Secure RBAC community-wide goal is finally being marked complete. On the technical front, Nova laid out an ambitious Indri plan including a libvirt/QEMU floor bump, Eventlet removal continues to chase down holdouts like Zun, and tooz is on track to return to a cycle-based release model. Operators also have two important deadlines: the contributor/maintainer surveys close October 18.

Releases & Governance

Secure RBAC goal declared done. Ghanshyam Maan has proposed marking the long-running SRBAC community-wide goal complete and disbanding the policy popup team (governance 1009912, 1009913). He notes the five-year effort required a mid-flight design change and that some projects never finished — a status captured in the tracking etherpad. tooz returning to cycle-with-intermediary. Takashi Kajinami is restarting his earlier proposal to move tooz off the independent release model and back under the cycle-with-intermediary model, matching the path most other Oslo libraries took. The motivation is renewed development activity (new drivers, cleanups) where stable branches would help downstream consumers backport fixes without heavy dependency churn. Development & Technical Decisions

Nova's Indri plan. René Ribaud posted a thorough 2027.1 PTG summary (notes). Key takeaways:

• Hibiscus retro: 8/8 accepted blueprints landed with 7 fully implemented (87%), ~60 bug fixes merged. Only 8 of 25 proposed features were accepted — review bandwidth remains the binding constraint.
• Proposed dates: spec review days Dec 5 & 12, soft spec freeze mid-December, hard spec freeze Jan 14 (M2), feature review days Feb 4 & 11, feature freeze Feb 18 (M3), release Mar 24 per the Indri schedule.
• Minimum version bump: proposal to raise the floor to libvirt 10.0.0 and QEMU 8.2.2 (what ships in Ubuntu 24.04). Deployers running older hypervisor stacks should start planning now.

Eventlet removal pursues Zun. Daniel Bengtsson is following up from the PTG Eventlet removal session with a direct ask to the Zun team: the project still uses monkey_patch, spawn_n, Timeout, and executor='eventlet', with no migration patches identified. He's looking for a status check, blockers, and volunteers before putting a timeline together. (thread)

New Cinder driver up for review. Miles Lee of QSAN Technology is seeking initial feedback on iSCSI and NVMe/TCP drivers in cinder 1006190 (blueprint qsan-cinder-driver). Zuul is green and local tox passes; third-party CI is still being stood up. (thread)

Neutron bug deputy report. Helen Chen's Oct 5–12 report flags 15 new bugs with strong patch coverage (13/15 have active patches). Notable items include a cluster of four ovn-octavia-provider health-monitoring bugs filed together on Oct 7, a 20-patch series for distributed DHCP RFE 2170291, a High-severity neutron-fwaas CI regression (bug 2169893), and an OVN router subnet-overlap regression (bug 2170284).

Operator Heads Up

Kolla image path change bites 2023.1 → 2024.1 upgraders. Dharani D hit 404s pulling quay.io/openstack.kolla/rabbitmq-3-12:2023.1-ubuntu-jammy during a RabbitMQ 3.11→3.12 bump as a prelude to the Antelope→Caracal upgrade. Operators on this upgrade path should double-check their image names and tags before kicking off production upgrades. (thread)

Kolla skipping the regular PTG slot. As a cycle-trailing project focused on completing its current release, Kolla is deferring its PTG to a Q1 meet-up. The team will take Kolla feedback in the shared Ops/Devs Q&A session instead. (thread)
